On February 20, 2015, the professional community dedicated to advancing the treatment of cleft palate and craniofacial disorders lost one of its “greats”—speech-language pathologist Betty Jane McWilliams, PhD. A model of dignity, compassion, integrity, and diligence, Dr. McWilliams unabashedly promoted excellence of care for her patients—and would accept no less. It is therefore a special honor to have been called upon by Special Interest Group 5, to pay tribute to my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Betty Jane McWilliams.
I am immeasurably grateful to have known Dr. McWilliams since 1975—as her student, colleague, and friend. Dr. McWilliams took a keen and caring interest in others, and throughout her life, enjoyed her connections with many former colleagues and students. In this brief tribute, I will share some highlights of her career and interests.
