The importance of oral pressure was first impressed upon me in Phonetics 101 when I learned that diacritical mark for noting whether a sound was aspirated or not. I believe even before that however, most of us are impressed when our parents or teachers tell us to enunciate more clearly. I believe they were asking us to aspirate or use more oral pressure in our speech. The decades long work of Don Warn has certainly solidified that in my mind and has contributed so much to my understanding of speech, normal and abnormal, that it is hard to pick out one thing. Suffice to say that Don Warren’s lifelong work has been a series of pearls of wisdom.
