Dr. Anne Smith, Distinguished Professor at Purdue University, gave the 2009 Zemlin lecture. She provided a comprehensive overview of what is known about speech motor development from infancy, through childhood, to adolescence. Her review takes a motor control perspective on speech development and includes topics such as the neural bases of the emergence of speech, the role of oral motor reflexes in speech motor development, the roles of feedback and feedforward mechanisms during development, and the relationship between speech motor processes and linguistic units. A representative overview and summary of her presentation can be found in an upcoming chapter that will appear in the 2010 Handbook of Phonetic Sciences edited by Hardcastle, Laver, and Gibbon published by Oxford Blackwell. Dr. Smith has provided a link to a draft of her upcoming chapter for your reading, it can be read at http://www.cla.purdue.edu/slhs/research/documents/Anne_Smith_Speech_Motor_Development.pdf.
