All training programs in speech-language pathology contain some form of academic preparation in the assessment and treatment of speech and language problems found in individuals who have various forms of craniofacial anomalies. Most programs provide preparation at the graduate level and either infuse the appropriate material into several courses or dedicate a single course to this area of study.
Curricular focus areas typically include embryology, dysmorphology, classification, incidence, prevalence, and etiology; treatment by medical, dental, and other allied health professionals; psychological/sociological issues; and the assessment and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders. The instructional activities are enhanced by providing students with a rich exposure of supporting media.
