The 1997 Steering Committee has embraced the concept of establishing closer ties with external groups and/or professional associations with goals and interests similar to this division. One of those professional associations is the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and many affiliates of this division are members. It was good to have Michelle Ferketic from ASHA attend the annual meeting of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association meeting in New Orleans in April 1997.
The Steering Committee—John Riski, Linda D’Antonio, Karlind Moller, Mary Anne Witzel, and H. Leeper (in spirit)—met in New Orleans to discuss goals and activities of the division for this year. Among other things, we discussed the possibility of presenting symposia/workshops addressing relevant topics/issues in orofacial disorders and speech. We agreed there is a real need for dissemination of information and discussion about interdisciplinary management of orofacial disorders and, specifically, the diagnostic and treatment issues that affect speech-language pathologists.
